GSK Opportunity Scholarship Fund

A Scholarship Fund

Established with $1 million dollars in 2009, this fund provides scholarships to Philadelphians who have overcome adversity such as serious illness, sexual abuse, domestic violence and personal loss.

The Difference It Makes

The most significant obstacles to getting a college education sometimes come from personal circumstances – the kind of adversity that can overwhelm those experiencing it.

The GSK Opportunity Scholarships support those who have triumphed over such situations with dignity and grace.

The fund honors those who will flourish in their chosen fields through a powerful combination of inner strength, commitment and having a dream.

It acknowledges that students need to be prepared to compete in a knowledge-based, innovative global economy.

Partnering for Impact

The Philadelphia scholarships are part of a national outreach by the international pharmaceutical and healthcare company.

“The Philadelphia Foundation is an incredible partner for GSK.  The Foundation has decades of experience managing all aspects of scholarship administration,” said Marti Skold-Jordan, GSK Manager of US Community Partnerships.

“From our STEM and Science Education work nationally, we know that community foundations like The Philadelphia Foundation ---which is one of the oldest – have the expertise needed to manage endowments and scholarships to help students in the entire region reach their potential.”

Building On Success

In 2011, GSK opened another fund at The Philadelphia Foundation with $4.5 million dollars. The GSK Inspiring Youth Endowment Fund has provided a $750,000 grant which funded summer youth work preparation programs and helped launch a bio-medical employment training program.
