Frequently Asked Questions About Grants

My organization is part of a national organization. Do I qualify for a grant?

If your organization has an office in the Philadelphia and/or the surrounding counties, serves a local constituency, is able to prove autonomy from the national organization, and isn’t an ineligible organization, then your organization may qualify for a grant for that local office. Otherwise, national organizations are ineligible to receive grants.

Will you fund programming?

We do not directly fund programming, with the exception of Fund For Children grants. If your organization is eligible and receives a General Operating Support Grant, those dollars can be used for programming and other needs of the organization.

Do you support organizations that also provide services to South Jersey?

Yes, The Foundation supports organizations in Burlington and Camden Counties through Organizational Effectiveness and General Operating Support grants. However, as these funds are limited, the grants will be smaller and fewer in number. In addition, this funding for South Jersey typically supports only organizations which have a special emphasis on serving the educational and development needs of pre-school and elementary age children in these communities and that do not have wide access to other sources of funding.

How do I submit my grant application?

After filling out your application, please submit it along with all of the supplemental materials to the following Drop Box locations:

Do not mail your application, as your grant request will not be considered submitted until we receive an electronic version.

I submitted my grant application. When will I be contacted by somebody at the Foundation?

You can expect to hear from someone with TPF within a month of when we begin to process your application. If you have not heard from a staff person, please call (215)563-6417 and ask to speak to someone on our grants team. Applications cannot be considered until all the documents have been submitted.

Can I apply more than one type of grant?

An organization is only allowed to apply for one Fund for Children grant every 12 months, with the exception of YOUTHadelphia.

For 2017 grantmaking, an organization that received General Operating Support funding through The Philadelphia Foundation’s discretionary process at any time during 2016 may apply for General Operating Support between Feb. 13, 2017 and April 14, 2017.

For 2017 grantmaking, an organization that received Organizational Effectives funding at any time during 2016 may apply for Organizational Effectiveness funding between May 5, 2017 and June 30, 2017.

Does the Foundation give grants to individuals?

No. The Foundation gives grants only to eligible nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations.
