Forman Family Fund Grants

The Nessa Forman, David Forman, Eleanor and Solomon Forman Family Fund -- a Designated Fund of The Philadelphia Foundation -- supports Southeastern Pennsylvania nonprofits serving young people aged 11 to 18 offering in-school or out-of-school-time programs that address one of the following areas:

  • Photography
  • Architectural Drawing and Architecture
  • Written Arts

Up to 10 grants of no more than $40,000 each will be awarded annually. The fund was established through the estate of Nessa R. Forman, former V.P. for Corporate Communications and Public Affairs at WHYY and former Arts and Leisure Editor of the Philadelphia Bulletin. She was a passionate advocate for arts education.

Letters of Interest will be screened for eligibility, alignment with the fund’s priorities and quality of programming. Successful LOI candidates will be invited by email on August 11, 2017 to submit a full proposal that will be due by Sept. 1, 2017. A grant determination will be made by Sept. 29, 2017.

For nonprofits offering these programs

In-school or out-of-school time programs open to all young people aged 11 to 18 that address one of the following areas:

  • Photography
  • Architectural Drawing and Architecture
  • Written Arts

Criteria for selection

  • Curriculum-based program at least one semester in length (preference for year-long programs)
  • Program must have been operating for at least two years with a proven track record

Requirements For Grant Applicants

  • Located in and/or serving constituents in five-county Southeastern Pennsylvania region
  • 501c3 status (or collaborating with experienced fiscal sponsor with 501c3 status)
  • Not a private foundation
  • If the organization is a religious institution, it may apply only for non-sectarian activities
  • Must have adopted nondiscrimination policy including race, color, religion, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any other legally protected characteristics.

Special Requirements

Organization must submit Letter of Interest.

Qualifying nonprofits will be invited to submit full application.

Amount of Grants

Up to 10 grants of no more than $40,000 each will be awarded annually.

Types of Projects Funded

  • Direct program expenses
  • Staff time
  • Materials and supplies
  • Indirect expenses (up to 15% to total grant amount)
  • Transportation, meals and field trips for participants
