Let's Talk

A big thank you to all who participated in our inaugural On the Table Philly initiative!

We were thrilled that there were close to 300 individual tables of 8 to 12 individuals – about 2,400 people in total -- with more than 150 organizational hosts and a wide geographic spread.

Topics covered included civic engagement, education, race, health, the environment, youth and arts and culture – and many more! The gatherings took place in venues such as library branches, local Ys, businesses, nonprofits and homes.

Piloted in Philadelphia for the first time by The Philadelphia Foundation and The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, On the Table Philly brought residents together in small groups for mealtime conversation about how to make their communities better places to live, work and play. The initiative was designed to engage residents in an open dialogue and inspire new solutions to strengthen communities.

“The Philadelphia Foundation is very pleased that so many organizations and individuals took advantage of this powerful opportunity,” said Pedro A. Ramos, President & CEO of The Philadelphia Foundation. “The rich conversations among neighbors, colleagues and new acquaintances will lift up an array of Greater Philadelphia’s needs and aspirations.”

"Philadelphia's On the Table inaugural event has the potential to ignite a sense of civic passion and purpose among all participants," said Patrick Morgan, Knight Foundation program director for Philadelphia.  "We hope the conversations act as a platform to build a greater community of problem-solvers who will inform public decision-making and city success."

We look forward to sharing the results of surveys completed after the event in a report to the community later this year!
