PHL COVID-19 Fund Deploys Additional Aid as Region Continues Its Recovery Efforts

PHILADELPHIA – The PHL COVID-19 Fund announced it will grant over $400,000 in its 8th round of funding to aid area nonprofits working to support the safe reopening of communities.

The Fund, launched on March 19 and led by the Philadelphia Foundation and United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey (UWGPSNJ), was established to rapidly deploy aid to nonprofits serving on the frontlines of the coronavirus. In total, the Fund has awarded over 575 grants totaling $17.9 million.

As the region moves towards restoring community life, this round of grants focuses on safety net organizations providing the infrastructure to enable individuals and families to safely return to work, learning activities and play. Among the organizations receiving grants are the Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers and the Leon H. Sullivan Charitable Trust.

The Camden Coalition works to advance healthcare by implementing person-centered programs that improve care for people with complex health and social needs. Grant dollars from the PHL COVID-19 Fund will be used to support the organization’s pivot to blended engagement — a mix of in-person and telephone support — for patients vulnerable to COVID-19. This move requires additional investment in devices, PPE and support for patient costs.

“The Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers, like nonprofits throughout our region, is safely providing our existing programming while adapting to emerging needs related to COVID-19,” said Kathleen Noonan, CEO. “With support from funders like the PHL COVID-19 Fund that have been responsive and swift in their giving, we have been able to focus on the vital work of supporting our community, which has been disproportionately affected by the pandemic.

Located in North Philadelphia, the Leon H. Sullivan Charitable Trust provides programming that facilitates economic and community development opportunities. The Trust also operates a 67,000 square-foot building, The Leon H. Sullivan Human Services Center, that provides deeply discounted working space for nonprofits delivering critical social and human services to residents of North Philadelphia and the surrounding communities.

“The Leon H. Sullivan Charitable Trust is grateful for the grant from the PHL COVID-19 Fund,” said Mable Welborn, Board Chair, Leon H. Sullivan Charitable Trust, owners of the Leon H. Sullivan Human Services Center. “These resources will enable us to maintain an acceptable standard of safety for our tenants and their clients who benefit from the health and human services at the Leon H. Sullivan Human Services Center.”

“The pandemic continues to bring unique challenges and unpredictability to nonprofit organizations,” said Pedro A. Ramos, President & CEO, Philadelphia Foundation. “It is imperative that nonprofits be able to deliver on the services that sustain our communities and keep them moving forward.”

“Safely reopening and prioritizing people’s needs are top of mind as we continue to respond, recover and rebuild,” said Bill Golderer, President & CEO of UWGPSNJ. “As we focus on rebuilding efforts, it will take all of us working together to ensure that funding, resources and long-term planning remains a top priority to help our neighbors come back stronger and our communities more resilient.”

The PHL COVID-19 Fund has prioritized supporting people who are hardest hit by the coronavirus crisis, such as seniors, people experiencing homelessness, those with disabilities, low-income residents without health insurance, people with substance abuse disorder and survivors of abuse.
