Past Philadelphia Foundation Advocacy Grantee Making an Impact

Founded in 2016, Free Migration Project (FMP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Philadelphia working at the intersection of law and community organizing to promote freedom of movement as a basic human right.

FMP leads the End Medical Deportation Campaign to stop the practice by hospitals of forcibly transporting ill or injured immigrant patients out of the country against their will. Since 2020, FMP has stopped attempted medical deportations in Philadelphia and Allentown, PA, and has provided support and information to communities facing medical deportation around the U.S.

Late last year, with the Campaign’s support, Philadelphia became the first city in the country to make medical deportation illegal.

FMP recently shared an update on their efforts to help a 23-year old woman named Virginia C. who had been wrestling with an impossible decision – give doctors at the University of Louisville Hospital permission to take her father off life support or see him put on a plane and sent to Guatemala, the country where her father was born.

You can read about this recent success or listen to Spanish language coverage of the story on El hilo, a podcast produced by Radio Ambulante Estudios that covers all Latin America and the Latino community in the United States.
